Woodcarving: Beginner Carver

Adult and Senior / Arts & Crafts -
Adult Enrichment 2024-2025

Woodcarving is a hobby that is enjoyed by 9 year- old Cub Scouts with a pocket-knife to those of an advanced age with more sophisticated tools. It is, by nature, a hobby where one may incur serious injury unless proper carving techniques and safety equipment are understood and used.

Students will work on a project and will be able to identify: the differences in use of a knife and a gouge, when it is advantageous to use a knife with a long blade, the difference between air-dried and kiln dried wood, how grain influences the ability to carve a wood, the reason a dull knife is more dangerous than a sharp knife, and the signs experienced when carving with a dull knife. In the beginner class, students will work on carving a chickadee.

The beginner carver has no, or limited experience. Instructor will have some equipment available to use during class, if you would like to purchase your own carving knife and safety glove, please call 952-928-6444 for product recommendations.
