Carve Your Own Walking Stick or Cane

Adult and Senior / Arts & Crafts -
Adult Enrichment 2024-2025

From the great outdoors to interior spaces, sticks and canes stabilize a person's walk. They can be of simple design or quite ornate and detailed. It is a useful skill to have when camping or in urban situations. They can be made with a simple Sloyd knife, as a paring knife, but with a different edge) or carving gouges, v-parting tools, and chisels can be used to put on detailed designs to embellish and personalize your stick and cane. Students will learn to evaluate wood, peel off the bark, reduce wood down to begin details, learn to carve details and ornamentation, sand, and smooth rough edges, and apply a finish to protect the wood. Instructor and professional woodcarver George Effrem will help you to make your cane or stick from choosing the material to applying a protective finish.

Participants will be responsible for paying a material fee to the instructor on the first day of class. Either $10 for a basic stick or $20 for a specialty stick. You will be asked which stick you plan on using when you enroll for the class.
