Intro. to Woodturning

Adult and Senior / Arts & Crafts -
Adult Enrichment 2025-2026

Discover the art and craft of woodturning using the wood lathe—a tool that transforms raw wood into beautiful, functional, or decorative objects like spindles, bowls, and more. This hands-on class introduces you to essential woodturning tools such as gouges, chisels, and scrapers, and shows you how to shape wood by cutting or scraping to match your own design or replicate an existing one.

We'll begin with a brief overview of the history of woodturning and explore inspiring examples. After a demonstration of basic techniques, each student will be given individual time on the lathe to create a simple spindle project to take home, options include a bud vase, salt shaker, or candle holder.

If time allows, a bowl-turning demonstration will also be included. The class will cover wood selection and grain orientation, an overview of sharpening basics, tool techniques from rough shaping to fine detailing, and how to choose and apply a protective finish to complete your piece.

No prior experience is necessary, just bring your curiosity and creativity.

Note: All class participants will be required to fill out an emergency form and sign a waiver of liability on the first night of class.
